University Primary School

As a nationally renowned primary school that continues to implement innovative approaches to learning, the University Primary School needed a professional web site that reflected the quality of their school.

Playing off the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, this site is eye-catching and informative. With a small Flash-based headline, users are instantly aware of UPS's commitment to learning.

This site was designed to provide a great deal of information about the school, and to create a better flow to their award-winning online curriculums.

University Primary School :: Online Curricula
 2003 :: www.ed.uiuc.edu/ups/curriculum2003
 2002 :: www.ed.uiuc.edu/ups/curriculum2002
 2001 :: www.ed.uiuc.edu/ups/curriculum2001

These three online curriculum sites represent the hard work done by the students and teachers at University Primary School. Each is a guide to two major projects/units taught during the year.

The sites were designed with all users in mind. My goal was to create visually appealing sites that were simple to navigate. The 2002 curriculum allowed us to incorporate not only pictures, but also video clips and students' PowerPoint presentations.

The 2001 and 2002 sites both won the annual National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) curriculum award.

This project was a unique challenge in terms of usability. The goal of UPS's Web View-N-Do project is to teach primary school children to create their own web sites. Students were taught to scan drawings, download pictures from a digital camera, and create web sites so their parents could see what is being learned in school.

My challenge was to create a directory structure that was simple enough for 6- and 7-year-olds to navigate. The initial page for this project (seen in the thumbnail at left) is a portal to each student's personal web site.

As part of a marketing effort, I redesigned Franklin Middle School's web site to reflect their newly revised mission and to provide more up-to-date information. This site has been a critical tool in an effort to rebuild the quality image of Franklin.
